97 Maryland artists receive State Arts Council Individual Artist Awards

BALTIMORE, MD  Thu, Feb 7, 2008

In celebration of the 10th annual Maryland Arts Day, Governor Martin O’Malley today announced that 97 Maryland artists have been selected to receive Individual Artist Awards totaling $250,000 from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development. The artists competed for $1,000, $3,000 and $6,000 awards in the following categories: Dance Solo Performance, Fiction, Media, Solo Instrumental Performance, Solo Vocal Performance, Solo Theatre Performance, Computer Arts, Photography and Sculpture. (See list of awardees below.)

“I am proud to announce the 97 winners of the Individual Artist Awards. We are fortunate to have so many talented artists within Maryland’s borders,” said Governor O’Malley. “The Individual Artist Awards program is an excellent way to honor their accomplishments and provide them with the resources they need to create and advance.”

“The awards recognize the vital role the arts play in our communities, enhancing the quality of life for all Maryland citizens,” said Dania Blair, Chair of the Maryland State Arts Council. “These awards also serve to express the appreciation of our citizens for the contributions made by individual artists to our communities.”

The Individual Artist Awards are given out annually, with the categories alternating each year. For this year’s awards, out-of-state juries representing each artistic discipline anonymously reviewed a total of 659 applications before awarding the individual grants, which were determined solely on the basis of artistic merit. For FY 09, the awards will be made in the following categories: Choreography, Crafts, Music Composition, Photography Playwriting, Poetry and Sculpture (excluding Installation). Applications are available by visiting www.msac.org.

The mission of the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, is to encourage and invest in the advancement of the arts for the people of Maryland. In FY 2007, the Maryland arts industry contributed more than $1.2 billion to the State’s economy and provided more than 15,000 jobs to Maryland residents.
